The East Gippsland Football League was born in 1974 from the union of two former leagues: the Gippsland Football League and the Bairnsdale District Football League. This merger marked the beginning of a new era in regional Australian Rules football, aimed at creating a more competitive and sustainable environment for local clubs.

Over the decades, the EGFL has seen many changes, including the ebb and flow of club numbers due to economic shifts and population changes in towns like Orbost. In the 1980s, the league even split into two divisions to balance competition and avoid overwhelming defeats, enhancing the experience for teams and fans alike.

Evolution of the League

Initially, the league featured clubs divided into two divisions, but dynamics shifted when some second division clubs formed the Riviera Football League in 1986. The landscape changed again when this league disbanded in 2004, leading to some clubs returning to the EGFL, while others joined different leagues.

Today, the EGFL boasts eight robust clubs, each with its own unique history and contributions to the league's rich tapestry. These clubs not only compete fiercely on the field but also foster community spirit and sportsmanship off it.
