Richmond coach Adem Yze decided not to push superstar Dustin Martin for an immediate decision about his playing future, despite ongoing speculation that Martin might join the Gold Coast Suns.

The Situation with Dustin Martin

  • Speculation: There’s been talk that Martin, 32, might move to the Gold Coast Suns. Suns coach Damien Hardwick mentioned it would be "crazy" not to consider Martin as a potential recruit for 2025.

  • Current Status: Martin was subbed out of last week's loss to Carlton with a sore back, raising questions about his fitness for the upcoming game against Fremantle.

Yze's Approach

Yze initially thought about setting an early August deadline for Martin to decide on his future. However, he chose instead to focus on keeping Martin happy and engaged, given the tough season Richmond has had with only two wins.

"Earlier in the year I did try to push it and say ‘let’s look at the end of July or the start of August or whatever it is - just so that we can make those decisions,’ and it’s obviously getting closer to that now," Yze said.

Martin's Condition and Outlook

Martin, a three-time Norm Smith medallist, is focusing on training and selection for upcoming matches. Yze emphasized the importance of Martin's happiness and health:

"He’ll make those decisions in the coming weeks on what he’s doing and what his future looks like. But right now, he’s thinking about getting out there and training and putting his hand up for selection."

Additional Player Decisions

Vice-captain Liam Baker is also considering big-money offers to return to Western Australia. Yze discussed his approach with both Martin and Baker, aiming to keep the focus on their current performance:

"It’s too hard to carry that sort of weight when you’re trying to work out what you’re gonna do and then still perform at a high level."

Management of Martin’s Injury

Martin might not play against Fremantle as part of a management plan to ensure his fitness for the rest of the season. Yze explained:

"One, we want to make sure his back is okay, and then we’ll make a decision on his full body and whether the six-day break and the travel is going to be a bit too much."

As the Tigers navigate a challenging season, Yze’s priority is keeping key players like Martin and Baker motivated and healthy. The decision about Martin’s future remains open, with Yze emphasizing the importance of player well-being over immediate decisions.
