Hawthorn forward Mitch Lewis will miss the rest of the 2024 season due to an ACL injury.

Lewis was injured during Saturday's game against Geelong after an aerial contest left him limping off the field. The 25-year-old had just returned from previous knee and hamstring injuries.

Scans Confirm ACL Injury

Scans revealed the extent of the injury, and Lewis will undergo ACL reconstruction. Hawks football boss Rob McCartney expressed the team's support for Lewis.

“Our thoughts are all with Mitch at this point in time,” McCartney said. “He has worked so hard to get his body right and return to AFL level, and this injury is a cruel blow. We are confident that with our medical team's expert guidance and Mitch's character, he will overcome the immediate challenges. Being only 25, Mitch has a bright future ahead in the brown and gold and is an integral part of our club. Most importantly, we are focused on supporting Mitch through this time.”

Season Over After Just Four Games

Lewis is expected to be out for nearly 12 months, ending his 2024 season after just four games. He played the first three games of the season before a hamstring strain in the Easter Monday clash against the Cats, followed by a knee cartilage issue. He returned last weekend and scored two goals in Hawthorn's 51-point loss.

Recent Setbacks and Future Prospects

The injury follows a breakout period for Lewis, who kicked 73 goals across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He joins fellow Hawks forward Sam Butler and defender James Blanck, who are also out until 2025.
