Early Life

Alastair Clarkson, born in Kaniva, Victoria on April 27, 1968, grew up in a rural setting where he attended Ballarat Clarendon College. In his early years, Clarkson immersed himself in sports, playing for the Kaniva & Districts Football Club and participating in school cricket and football teams.

His upbringing in a small town instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep love for the game. Despite the challenges of rural life, Clarkson’s passion for sports shone through, initiating a remarkable journey that would lead him to become one of the most renowned AFL coaches of all time.

Playing Career

During his time as a player in the AFL, Clarkson debuted for North Melbourne in 1987 before moving on to Melbourne Football Club in 1996. He played a total of 93 games for North Melbourne, scoring 61 goals during his time with the club.

In his first year at Melbourne, Clarkson averaged 23.5 disposals, showcasing his skills on the field. However, his playing career was cut short when he retired in 1997 after playing 41 games for Melbourne.

Despite not having an extensive playing career, Clarkson’s shift from player to coach would prove to be the defining chapter of his involvement in Australian Rules Football.

Coaching Career

In his shift from player to coach, Alastair Clarkson commenced on a successful coaching career that would leave a lasting impact on the AFL landscape. Clarkson’s coaching journey began as an assistant at St Kilda, followed by head coaching roles at Werribee and Central District Football Club. In 2003, he joined Port Adelaide as an assistant coach before being appointed as the senior coach of Hawthorn in 2005. Under his leadership, Hawthorn achieved remarkable success, winning four premierships. Clarkson’s strategic acumen and ability to develop players played a pivotal role in Hawthorn’s dominance during his tenure.
