Starting as an assistant coach for the Brisbane Bears in 1994, Brittain shifted to the Carlton Football Club in 1996. His tactical acumen shone as he took over more responsibilities, eventually leading Carlton as the senior coach in 2001. Although his tenure at Carlton ended in 2002, Brittain continued to make an impact, joining the Richmond Football Club as an assistant coach under Danny Frawley.
